Allergies
Allergies are abnormal reactions to ordinarily harmless
substances, which are then termed allergens. The immune system of
an allergic person perceives an allergen, such as pollen, as an invader
and initiates a biochemical chain reaction. A release of the body
chemical histamine cause symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes,
itching, and sneezing. The most common allergens include pollens,
molds, dust mites, animal dander (skin flakes shed by animals with
fur); certain foods; medications; droppings from cockroaches and other
pests; and insect stings.
Allergic reactions include hay fever, eczema, dermatitis, and hives.
These conditions may be acute or chronic; they may be caused by a
known trigger or have no identifiable cause. Allergies can lead to
respiratory infections; acute allergic reactions can cause life threatening
breathing problems.
Allergies affect children and adults and can interfere with the carrying
out of the daily activities of life.
