Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders are serious medical illnesses that affect
about 19 million American adults. Unlike the relatively mild brief
anxiety caused by a stressful event, anxiety disorders are chronic,
relentless, and can grow progressively worse if not treated. These
problems include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder,
specific phobias, and others.
People with anxiety disorders may experience a wide variety of physical
symptoms, including trembling, twitching, muscle tension, headaches,
irritability, sweating, or hot flashes; they may have trouble sleeping
and eating, may feel lightheaded, nauseated, or out of breath. They
may feel tired, have trouble concentrating, and sometimes suffer depression.
Severe anxiety disorders can be debilitating, making it difficult
to carry out even the most ordinary daily activities.
